What do I need to upgrade my PC in preparation for Broadband?

What do I need to upgrade my PC in preparation for Broadband?

Nothing - virtually every PC in current everyday use is more than capable of connecting to broadband.
If you have a free USB socket (it doesn’t have to be USB2) then you can connect to ADSL Broadband (ordinary phone line).
If you have a free USB or Network socket you can connect to Virgin Media Cable Broadband (previously NTL or Telewest).
Only a network socket and want to connect to ADSL? You can connect through an ADSL modem router.
If your PC doesn’t have any USB or network sockets then it’s probably very old, but could connect by the addition of a network card or a USB card or a Wireless card.
Broadband speed may be fast compared to dial-up internet speed, but compared to the internal speed of a PC it is trivial and any PC will support broadband. Unless it’s a museum piece!
So speed-wise you need nothing - but if you are going to use the internet to download masses of music files then you may need another hard drive to hold them all!
And if you are going to broadband you will need to step up your security with a firewall, antivirus program and antispyware program. ZoneAlarm, AVG and Windows Defender are all available to do those jobs for free.

Create A Facebook Business Page 10 Top Tips

Create A Facebook Business Page 10 Top Tips

I could not believe my eyes when I recently checked my stats for my website and realized how much traffic was coming from my Facebook business page.  I have been promoting my Facebook business page, or maybe I have just been making use of it. It is quite simple really, I have been promoting every article that I publish my website, not only on my Facebook page, but on other peoples as well.
the reason I just started to do this now after three years of having websites for a business, is because I researched my stats and also discovered that Facebook traffic equals income from my website. This means that they are actually bringing money into my business, not one of the top money earners, it possibly could be in the future though.
I have had my Facebook business page for a long time, and left the to its own devices by using auto update programs to enter in a new status each time I post an article on my blog. I thought this method would be enough, but when I started actually using my Facebook business page, I realized that it could give me so much more.

10 tips for making the best Facebook business page

1. Naming your page

Create your Facebook business page using keywords from your website or business. It is important to use keywords in everything you do, as when people are searching, every little bit helps. You also want people to know what your page is about when they land on it. Do not think of some fancy name and let people wonder what the hell the page is about?
Watch this YouTube video on how to create a Facebook page.

2. Facebook business page promotion

Grab a badge or a link to promote your Facebook business page to your customers and fans.you can choose a simple link or a massive box showing all your fans on it. In the screen shot below it shows a picture of my Facebook like box that I have placed on my website. I simply pasted the code that I got from Facebook into a text widget and placed it into the side bar on the right. Make sure you go and press the like button!

3. Customize your Facebook business page

Make sure you investigate how your Facebook business page looks before inviting your new friends and visitors. Check out every Up the top to make sure there is content on it. This is just the professional thing to do.

4. Branding your page

Many people do not use the Facebook page to its full potential. They simply throw up a small picture as the profile picture and think that this is enough to attract new fans.I like to create a 200×600 pixel branding banner for the side bar of my Facebook business page. This takes up a lot of space and looks great! It is like being offered space in a newspaper and only taking up not even a quarter of it. Why would anyone do that?

5. Spreading the word

Even though you have added badges and links to your website, what about everywhere else? Add a link to your Facebook page in your e-mail signatures, correspondence, business cards, and anything you can think of. Most profiles on websites let you connect into your Facebook account. For example most forums now days, allow you to have your own little Facebook icon under your name. Therefore each post you make has a link to your Facebook page.

6. Update your Facebook page

Post news and new blog posts to your Facebook page status. I do not like using auto posting status updates as it does not allow you to customize it and put your say with it. Also if you personally do it you will probably encourage more conversations between the visitors. Do not only post content from only your website; update your status with any great content you think your readers will enjoy.

7. Facebook page options

Most people forget to set their Facebook page options up correctly. You need to set options such as if people can post on your wall or not, what page a new visitor lands on, and who can see your updates. If you do not know how to get to the settings for your Facebook page, watch the video in number eight and it will show you a few things.

8. Add a custom made landing page

Make your own customized Facebook landing page where you can put images, videos, and even an opt in form. It is just like a website page and it is great for branding and advertising your business. some people add in actions for people to do. For example a number one action would be to press the like button above to join the page, the next action would be to sign up for a newsletter, and maybe another action could be to download a free report.
Watch this video below to see how to make a custom FBML ( Facebook markup language) tab to use as a landing page for your Facebook business page.

9. Networking with others

Work with other Facebook business page owners that have similar topics. Webmasters are used to doing this as this is the way we work. We are always exchanging links and promoting each other’s products. Going connect with other business owners within your niche and see if they will post your updates on the Facebook page as well.

10. Encourage interaction

Allow your visitors to post to your Facebook business page wall could be the difference between a dead Facebook page and one that is pumping with interaction and comments.. Which one do you want? you cannot be scared of a little bit of competition as some other Webmasters may also be your customers, you never know.

What is a Virus and how do I know if I have one?

What is a Virus and how do I know if I have one?

If you are asking “What is a virus” then it is very important that you read through this article. There are some obvious symptoms that your computer will develop when it gets infected with a virus and to recognize these, you need to know what a virus is. But the first thing I have to mention is that if you had a decent antivirus program installed on your computer you would not have a problem. The virus programs now days are fantastic in crushing any chances of a viruses infecting your computer. There are many ways to protect your computer from viruses, however, knowing what a virus is should be your number one priority, sites likewww.identityhawk.com will also stress this.

What is a virus?

What is a virus is a very important question! A virus is a small program that gets into your computer undetected in order to cause havoc. This small software program has either been developed because the author enjoys causing disasters for other people or sometimes for monetary gains. Sometimes a virus is packaged in a file that is called a trojan virus. It is disguised as something else, and once it has gained access to your computer it then releases its intent.  Also see What’s the difference between a virus, spyware, Malware, and adware?
Here are some more technical definitions relating to what is a virus from other websites:
Wikipedia – what is a virus?
Microsoft – what is a computer virus?

What is a virus and how does it get onto my computer?

The people that develop these viruses are constantly finding new ways to infiltrate your computer. When one door shuts, another one opens for them. However the most common ways to get a virus on your computer is through the internet. You might download a file that contains a virus, or maybe you might open an email that has one attached to it. Sometimes even visiting a bad website can infect your computer. The worst one of all, however, is when people download illegal cracked software. This software has usually been taken apart and repackaged with a few extras attached. Maybe you download music or videos from the internet. How do you know you are actually downloading the file you intended to. The file may be named to deceive you, and once you open it you will release the virus.
Another common way to get a virus is to see software appear on your screen that is posing as an antivirus program. The minute you press the cross button to close the program or even the scan button, because it is telling you to scan for viruses, you are immediately infected by this virus. If you see a program come up on your screen that you know you did not install, the best way to shut it down is to open up task manager and end the process.

How do I know if I have a virus or not?

If your computer has been infected with a virus you will quickly see odd signs that it exists. Weird things start happening that you cannot explain. Files might move around, odd error messages may appear, programs might start to fail. For example if your virus scanner program stops working then it could have been disabled by a virus. With all this action taking place in the background your computer will also start to run slow and seem like it is busy all the time.
When browsing the internet you might find that you will not able to visits the pages that you choose. You will be redirected to different websites. You computer might also be sending emails to everyone in your contact list without you knowing.

What can a virus do to my computer hardware components?

People think that a virus simply attacks the file systems of your computer, however this is not true. Some viruses are designed to damaged computer hardware components until they are ruined completely.
Many people will argue that a virus only infects software, however all hardware is controlled by various types of software. Infact the entire computer is controlled by BIOS which is software. BIOS controls the temperature of the motherboard. What if a viruses only purpose was to change the temperature control on your motherboard. The motherboard would overheat and fry itself.
In the old days viruses used to be developed to set the read speed of a floppy disk drive to speeds beyond its capability. The Floppy disk drive would overheat and fry from being overworked. Now days Windows Vista has a service called Superfetch that searches your hard drive, finds out what you use the most, and makes it available for you.. If you made a virus to control Superfetch, we could have a serious problem. Most Vista users already have Superfetch disabled on their computer. A virus could enable it, tell it all files are important, keep it searching non stop, and fry your hard drive that way. Now I can here someone saying “yeah right, not with all the security we have around today”. Well you should never underestimate these guys who develop viruses. They can work around anything.

What should I do if I get a virus?

If you suspect that your computer has a virus, scan your computer asap with an antivirus program. If you do not have one or yours is not working, download another one, or get a free scan using the free online virus scanners.
Here is a list of free online virus scanners.
Symantec Security Check, McAfee FreeScan, Panda ActiveScan, Trend Micro,Kaspersky lab, bitdefender, and there are so many more. There is no guarantee that these free scanners will cure your computer but they might just confirm the fact that you actually have a virus.
If you find viruses but cannot remove them you will need to take your computer to a professional before you lose everything. Another option is to format your computer which means you loose all the files on it and re-install a fresh copy of the operating system. You can backup your files first, but please be aware that they might be infected with a virus also.
If you have scanned your computer, found viruses, and successfully deleted them, then now is the time to buy a decent program that will stop this from happening again. See my review of the best Virus Removal Software.
Do not continue to use the computer without taking action because the longer you leave it the further the virus can spread.

What is a virus? What file types commonly contain viruses?

Lets face it, downloading is a dangerous business, especially when you have important files stored on your computer. Any file you download can contain a virus. My rule for downloading is to ask myself “Do I know and trust this website I am about to download from?”
Here are a few examples of common files that could contain viruses:
EXE FILE: If you download a program or anything that requires an install file then it will be an .exe file. When you press on it to install to your computer you could be releasing a virus.
ZIP FILE: People download zip files from the internet that contain any other file type and you will not see it’s contents until you open it. A zip file might have an exe file in it.
SCR FILE: Free screensavers for your computer. They always have something bad in them. Sometimes adware or viruses.
DOC FILE: A Microsoft word document can contain macros and small scripts that are viruses.
If you haven’t got antivirus software installed on your computer you can try Avast. It also takes care of spyware, malware, etc and it is fantastic!  Take advantage of avast! try before you buy policy. avast! offer most of their products on a trial basis for 60 days. Click here

Notes on what is a virus:

  • There is a lot of confusion about actually “what is a virus” because there are so many different types of viruses out there.
  • Most, if not all websites on the Internet agree that a virus is a small piece of software that invade your computer.
I hope you are not still asking “what is a virus” as this can be a very dangerous question.

The Coroner’s Toolkit–How The FBI Recovers Deleted Files Using Free Software

The Coroner’s Toolkit–How The FBI Recovers Deleted Files Using Free Software

The FBI recovers deleted filesto help with investigations and prosecution. Bad guys will never stop trying to cover their tracks by deleting files–so the good guys developed a suite of free tools that let anyone recover deleted files. The tools presented in this article were used in FBI investigations that processed 1,756 terrabytes of data as part of over 4,500 cases in 2009, the most recent year for which data is available.
Recovering Deleted Files Basics: What Happens When A File Gets Deleted
For whatever reason, you decide to delete the file foo.docx from your computer. You open Windows Explorer, go to the directory holding foo.docx, highlight the file, and press the delete key on your keyboard. Sometime later–maybe minutes later, maybe weeks later–you clear out your Trash folder. As far as Windows is concerned, this means you want to permanently delete foo.docx, so Windows gets to work:Recover Deleted Files The Same Way The FBI Does
  1. Windows checks to see if the file appears in multiple directories, a feature borrowed from Unix and Linux called hard links. If the file exists in multiple locations, Windows doesn’t delete the file–it just removes its entry from your Trash directory.
  2. Windows puts a note in its journal that foo.docx should be deleted. It may sound silly for an operating system to have a journal, but the journal ensures that the computer can quickly recover if there’s a sudden crash or power loss.
  3. Windows opens up the Master File Table (MFT), finds foo.docx, and removes its entry. Note: this does not delete the file, it just makes it impossible for Windows to find it anymore.
  4. Windows removes the note it put in its journal earlier. Windows is done deletingfoo.docx.
After the file is deleted, all of its data still exist on your disk drive. There’s just no record of where the file is on your disk drive, so standard programs can’t find it. I use a Super Data Rescue Package to recover clients files and save time but there are free options available.

The Four Secrets To Recovering Deleted Files

Secret One: The sooner you try to recover a file after its been deleted, the greater your chance of success. That’s because Windows will write new files on top of old, deleted files. Once a new file gets written on top of the deleted file, there’s no way to recover the whole deleted file.
If you just deleted a file that you really need, you can almost guarantee it won’t be overwritten by immediately unplugging your computer from the wall. Of course, this means none of the other open files on your computer will be saved.
Secret Two: Smaller files are easier to recover than bigger files. That’s because the Window’s filesystem (NTFS) uses fragmentation to maximize the amount of space you can use on your disk drive. Smaller files have fewer fragments, making it easier to find all the parts of the file. The ideal number of fragments is one.
A useful corollary is that you’ll have better success retrieving deleted files if you regularlydefragment your drive. After defragmenting, almost every file will have only one fragment.
Secret Three: You need to know the type of file in order to recover it. The only place the filename is stored on Windows is the Master File Table (MFT), so you can’t search for files by filename after the file is removed from the MFT. You need to know what type of file it is in order to find it–in our example, we assume foo.docx was a Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 file.
Secret Four: You need to ensure the disk drive runs as read-only before you attempt to recover files. This is to prevent Windows from overwriting the file you want to recover. Many USB drives and some USB disk drive enclosures have a read-only switch–this works great: safely remove the drive or unplug the USB cord like usual, toggle the switch, and reinsert the drive or cord.
Some internal disk drives have a read-only switch, although you may need to mess with electric jumpers to toggle it. Unfortunately most internal disks don’t have a read-only switch and, what’s worse, Windows doesn’t like to boot from a read-only disk. We’ll deal with this problem in the next section.

How the FBI Recovers Deleted Files

The original set of programs for low-level file recovery is called The Coroner’s Toolkit (TCT). TCT was incorporated into other more advanced toolkits which will be described here called The Sleuth Kit (TSK) and Autopsy.
FBI Recovers Deleted Files
Despite their morbid names, TSK and Autopsy are vibrant tools capable of assorted tasks. They don’t run on Windows directly–you need to run them from a Linux live DVD or virtualization program like VMWare. This won’t remove or damage your Windows installation and it can lets you access your drive in read-only mode.
Although there are many Linux live DVDs and virtual environments that contain TSK and Autopsy, we suggest BackTrack Linux available at backtrack-linux.org. Unless you’re familiar with VMWare, you should download the DVD ISO image and burn it to a DVD. Then place the DVD in the computer with the deleted file and reboot.
After BackTrack finishes loading, you’ll find a stylized K where the Start menu usually appears in Windows. Click the K, go to the BackTrack menu, Go do the Digital Forensics menu, and choose Launch Autopsy. Then open the Web Browser (a globe icon next to the K icon) and browse tohttp://localhost:9999/autopsy.
Autopsy is an easy-to-use HTML-based frontend to the dozens of commands in TSK. On the main screen of Autopsy, you want to create a New Case, then follow the menus. When you get to the File Analysis screen, choose “Show All Deleted Files”. It will take a long time for all of the files to appear–TSK must scan every unused bit of your disk drive to see if it contains a deleted file. You can expect the process to take about 1 minute for every 10 GBs on your disk drive.
After TSK finds all the deleted files, you can sort through them to find the file you need. Then all you need to do to recover the deleted file is click on its link and save it.
